Uzbekistan plans to purchase up to 700 thousand tons of iron ore from Tajikistan
Uzbekistan plans to annually import up to 700 thousand tons of iron ore from Tajikistan, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said during a speech at the Uzbek Metallurgical Plant in Bekabad.
According to him, over the past 10 years, the country`s demand for sheet metal, long rolled metal products, pipe products and metal structures has tripled and reached 5.5 million tons per year.
“Only for the construction of a nuclear power plant, a fourth copper processing plant and a new copper smelter, about 2.5 million tons of rolled sheets and fittings will be required,” Mirziyoyev noted.
The President also said that in the next five years, the country plans to commission new production facilities worth a total of $180 billion, implement infrastructure projects worth $27 billion, and build housing for 800 thousand families. As a result, by 2030, the annual demand for metal products will increase by one and a half times and exceed 8 million tons.
The Uzbek Metallurgical Plant produces about 40% of rolled metal from recycled materials, while the remaining 60% is produced using imported raw materials. At the same time, despite the annual receipt of about 700 thousand tons of scrap ferrous metals by the enterprise, another 500 thousand tons of scrap metal, according to the president, remain in shadow circulation.
Mirziyoyev recalled that proven reserves of iron ore in Uzbekistan are estimated at 1.5 billion tons. In addition, an agreement was reached with Chinese partners to organize the annual production of 650 thousand tons of iron ore through the enrichment of ore from the Surun-ota deposit.
Another strategic project will be the development of the Tebinbulak deposit, which will allow the production of up to 1 million tons of steel annually. The President also instructed to speed up the execution of an agreement on the annual supply of 700 thousand tons of iron ore with the Tajik Metallurgical Plant.
The launched foundry and rolling complex of the Uzbek Metallurgical Plant will create conditions for the production of products with a total value of about 1.5 billion dollars. The new facilities will be focused on the automotive industry, the production of special equipment, technological equipment, household and agricultural equipment, as well as construction materials.
